Helping Your Child Get Organized: Many students are challenged in spatial concepts, including 'left' and 'right', or that seeing that 'was' is not the same as 'saw'. Spatial skills affect one's ability to correctly space letters/words; line up numbers in a math equation, and to keep their place when reading. It also impacts on their organizational levels in keeping their desk neat and their bedroom tidy. It is typical for students to have not mastered left/right concepts until about seven years of age, yet after that it is a cause of concern. To help your child improve in this area, use spatial directions when communicating with them about retrieving items or going to a location. Playing games such as checkers helps build this skill, as does doing parquetry blocks and building with Lego, particularly when you include verbal descriptions of what is being accomplished.
